5th Session of China-Portugal Economic and Trade M

Zhang Zhigang, Vice Minister of Commerce of the PRC, and Dulce Franco, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy of Portugal said today that governments of China and Portugal would take more effective measures to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

At the 5th session of China-Portugal Economic and Trade Mixed Commission, Zhang Zhigang said, since the initiation of reform and opening up, China's national economy had kept growing, which brought about sound opportunities for the economic and trade cooperation between China and Portugal. The two countries had great potentials in furthering bilateral trade and cross investment. He expressed his welcome to Portuguese businesses to invest in China, especially in western and Northeastern China.

Mr. Franco said, the Session was held at the 25th anniversary of China-Portugal diplomatic relationship and coincided with the visit of the Portuguese Foreign Minister Jaime Gama to China. It indicated that Portuguese government attached much importance to the communication and cooperation with China in the fields of politics, economy, culture, etc.

Both sides agreed to enhance the regular communication between economic and trade administrative departments and the business community, to expand the cooperation in tourism, and to intensify the economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. According to Customs statistics of China, bilateral trade between China and Portugal in 2003 broke through US$600 million, up by 56.7% compared with the previous year, of which China's import was close to US$200 million, up by 135.5%.
